Authorised Gas Tester / Entry Supervisor

a) An Authorised Gas Tester (AGT) is the person responsible for conducting atmospheric testing within a confined space.

b) An Entry Supervisor (ES) is the person responsible for supervising all activities before, during, and after the entry operation of workers into a confined space.

c) An employer shall appoint, employ, or engage a competent person known as AGTES to conduct gas testing and supervise the entry process into a confined space as prescribed in the Industry Code of Practice for Safe Working in a Confined Space 2010.

d) The AGT & ES appointed by the employer must have attended a training course on safe working in confined spaces specifically for authorised gas testers and entry supervisors, and must have passed the required tests or examinations.

e) An AGT shall:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of potential hazards that may be encountered during entry, including information on the mode, signs, symptoms, and consequences of exposure;
  • Identify all hazards and recommend control measures to ensure safe entry;
  • Be proficient in the use of all confined space entry equipment;
  • Test and interpret gas reading levels within the confined space;
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as stated in the Industry Code of Practice for Safe Working in a Confined Space 2010.

f) An ES shall:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of potential hazards that may be encountered during entry into a confined space;
  • Supervise all activities before, during, and after entry operations into a confined space;
  • Conduct inspections and verify that all procedures, tests, and equipment specified in the work permit have been complied with before the permit is approved;
  • Terminate the entry and cancel the work permit if acceptable entry conditions cannot be maintained;
  • Close the work permit once the entry is completed; and
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as stated in the Industry Code of Practice for Safe Working in a Confined Space 2010.

a) Malaysian citizen and possess a valid identity card issued by the Malaysian government.

b) Academic Qualifications

  • Have at least SPM or equivalent qualification and credit in Science subject or at least grade C in Science subject;
  • Have 3 years of work experience in the confined space field; and
  • Attend a course and pass the Certified Gas Tester and Entry Supervisor (AGTES) examination at a training provider registered with the Director General.

c) Additional Qualifications (Does not meet academic qualifications)

  • Have 10 years of work experience in the field of confined spaces;
  • Attend a course and pass the Certified Gas Tester and Entry Supervisor (AGTES) examination at a training provider registered with the Director General; and
  • Pass the assessment/interview/verification session conducted by DOSH.

d) Procedure

  • If the application meets the required conditions, the applicant will be registered as an AGTES;
  • Registration applications must be submitted to the Department no later than three (3) months before the expiry of the validity period of the AESP training certificate and AGTES examination qualification certificate; and
  • The approval period is based on the approval period of the AGTES examination from NIOSH or the completion period of the project currently occupied (whichever expires first).

e) Additional Requirements

  • Having a permanent employer instead of freelance where the AGTES work carried out is under the responsibility of the company; and
  • AGTES are only allowed to carry out work for the company and AGTES' approval to work for the company will be stated in the AGTES registration certificate issued by the Department.
  • Applicants must attach a company profile containing at least the following information:-
    • The work process at the company or the services provided;
    • List of confined space activities at the Employer's company;
    • List of machinery/confined spaces and copy of CF (if relevant);
    • List of projects related to confined spaces (if there are no confined space activities/work on own/employer's premises); and
    • Pictures of work related to confined spaces.
