Occupational health

Introduction

The Occupational Health Division is responsible for the enforcement of occupational health-related legal requirements in Malaysia. The Division also strives to promote occupational health practices and health protection in all places of work.

Occupational health promotion among employers as well as employees is imperative in encouraging safe and healthy work practices and ultimately may result in occupational disease-free workplaces.

The Occupational Health Division consists of Medical Officers, Head Nurses, and Health Inspectors. It is divided into two (2) sections, namely the Accreditation Section and Occupational Medicine Section.

Monitoring notification of occupational diseases and occupational poisoning cases and assisting in the investigation of these cases in the respective states.

Analysing reported occupational diseases and poisoning cases data, streamlining them with the data from other relevant agencies and subsequently preparing the national occupational diseases and poisoning statistics.

Providing input on occupational health related issues to other government agencies, departments or ministries.

Promoting the adoption and monitoring the implementation of the Code of Practice on Prevention of HIV / AIDS at the Workplace, and the Code of Practice on Prevention and Elimination of Drugs, Alcohol and Substance Abuse in The Workplace.

Planning and organizing seminars, workshops and courses to promote occupational health knowledge and awareness.

Investigating occupational disease cases for ex-gratia compensation of government employees on request basis from the Ministry of Finance. ex-gratia government employees when there is an application from the Malaysian Ministry of Finance.

Conducting Basic Occupational Health Program (BOH), particularly in the Small and Medium Industries.

Conducting Health Screening Program (MyHeSS) and organizing Basic Occupational First Aid Programme for DOSH officers.

Registering Occupational Health Doctors (OHD) and renewing their competency certificates under Section 31C and 31E of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994.

Monitoring of occupational health activities by the OHDs, particularly the Medical Surveillance Programme, audiometric testing, and notification of occupational diseases.

Conducting workplace investigations pertaining to Medical Surveillance Programmes, especially adherence to the Medical Removal Protection (MRP) and other aspects of occupational health legal requirements.

Planning and organizing seminars, courses, or dialogues to promote occupational health awareness.

Providing advisory services to state offices, external agencies, occupational health (OH) practitioners, OSH practitioners and the public regarding health issues related to employment.
