Office of Legal Counsel
Introduction
The Legal Division plays an important role in advising the Department on matters involving legal issues and includes the following scope of work:
- Provide legal advice on occupational safety and health issues to the Department in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Constitution and relevant written laws;
- Reviewing agreement documents and memorandums of understanding to be signed by the Department as well as any other instruments containing legal elements to ensure that all documents are in order in terms of law;
- Monitor, manage, supervise, and coordinate prosecution and compound cases nationwide involving the Department;
- Conduct civil litigation for lawsuits involving the Department and issue notices of claim against parties liable for outstanding workplace or machinery registration fees;
- To gazette the appointment of officers of the Department, exemption orders, or any orders or regulations made by the Department;
- Reviewing proposed amendments to acts, orders, and regulations as well as the formulation of new orders and regulations, and
- Collaborate with other departments to provide legal training and advice.
